The new mineral dust detector from NASA is prepared for launch.

Strong winds transport mineral dust from Earth's deserts at a rate of more than one billion metric tonnes annually, or the weight of 10,000 aircraft carriers.

They lack sufficient evidence to fully assess what such effects are or might be in the future.

These knowledge gaps will be filled by NASA's Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) instrument.

Significantly improve scientific knowledge of the effects of dust on the Earth system.

The majority of the mineral dust that enters the atmosphere is produced in desert areas.

it is challenging for scientists to manually collect soil and dust samples from throughout these enormous areas.

Information on the hue and make-up of dust sources will also be provided by the image spectrometer.
